  • Mel Gibson speaks with Diane Sawyer about his “stupid rambling as a drunkard” on Good Morning America, which will air Thursday and Friday mornings. “The last thing I want to be is that kind of monster.   • Evangeline Lily and Dominic Monaghan are planning to get married next summer in Hawaii, according to The Post.
  • Katie Couric received her worst ratings last week, the fifth week of her evening news program. Couric remained in third place and she averaged only 7 million viewers, 1.5 million viewers less than Brian WilliamsNightly News.
  • Jon Stewart shot down rumors that he’d make a run for the White House and said the T-shirts promoting him and Stephen Colbert “are a real sign of how sad people are” with the state of affairs in the country. “Nothing says ‘I am ashamed of you my government’ more than ‘Stewart/Colbert ‘08,’ Stewart told an audience Sunday at the New Yorker Festival.
  • David Bowie has lent his voice to SpongeBob Squarepants. Bowie will play Lord Royal Highness in a SpongeBob special. Apparently his daughter is a huge fan of the show and they watch it together.

  • Nominations for the American Music Awards came in twos and threes for artists this year. Mariah Carey, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Black Eyed Peas, and Nickelback each captured three nominations, while Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kanye West, Jamie Foxx, T.I., Rascal Flatts, Pussycat Dolls, and former American Idols Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood earned a pair of nods each. The show will be November 21 at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium during a three-hour ABC-TV special.
  • Saturday Night Live dumps Chris Parnell, Horatio Sanz, and Finesse Mitchell.
  • Jennifer Lopez is jumping on the reality TV bandwagon with a new show calledRelative Chaos — families will be “Punk’d” by visiting relatives.

  • While Kate Hudson hangs out with Owen Wilson in Maui, estranged husband Chris Robinson has been spotted solo in Manhattan.
  • Alanis Morissette will appear on FX drama Nip/Tuck this season. Alanis will play the love interest for Roma Maffia’s character, Dr. Liz Cruz, in three episodes, beginning Oct. 31.
  • Former New Jersey Gov. James E. McGreevey, who has remained publicly silent since resigning from office two years ago after announcing he was gay, is set to tell his story on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” Oprah landed the exclusive interview with 49-year-old McGreevey because of her sense of faith and spirituality, according to friends of the former governor. About a dozen friends accompanied McGreevey and his partner, Australian financial adviser Mark O’Donnell, 42, to Chicago for the taping scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. The interview will air Sept. 19, the same day McGreevey’s political memoir, “The Confession,” goes on sale.
  • Anna Nicole Smith was so distraught after son Daniel Smith was pronounced dead that she had to be sedated, her attorney Michael Scott said Wednesday. “The devastation and grief over Daniel’s sudden death coupled with the sedation has been so extreme that Anna Nicole experienced memory loss and that it was necessary for [attorney Howard K Stern] to tell Anna again that Daniel had passed away,” he added. Yesterday it was revealed that Stern was also in the room when the 20-year-old passed out. Meanwhile, the chief inspector of the Bahamas coroner’s office on Wednesday called Smith’s death “suspicious” and authorities say Anna Nicole will be subpoenaed to testify at the coroner’s inquest next month.

  • Without explanation, Jennifer Lopez has abruptly quit the remake of the 1970s smash hit show, Dallas.
  • Uma Thurman says she will remain committed to her next flick, In Bloom, even though the director was recently arrested on sexual assault charges involving two Connecticut women.  Vladim Perelman was arrested after he allegedly groped two women and was later released on $5,000 bond.
  • Daisy Lowe, Gavin Rossdale’s 17-year-old daughter, speaks out for the first time about her rocker dad and his wife, Gwen StefaniLowe tells the September issue of W that she definitely doesn’ t call Stefani "stepmum" and she considers her mom’ s longtime boyfriend, Supergrass drummer Danny Goffey her "dad." Lowe and Rossdale occasionally exchange emails and are not very close.
  • The Hills wrapped three weeks ago but will begin filming the second season right away because it doesn’t want to miss a minute of its stars’ lives. The show, starring Lauren Conrad, is one of MTV’s highest rated shows.  Okay, but how dumb was she to pass up the internship in Paris?
  • The Pussycat Dolls will search for a new member this winter.  The new CW network says it’s staging an eight-week search and the group, which is apparently down a member (lead singer Nicole Scherzinger went solo), will judge the contest. Ladies and gentleman, we have another reality TV flop on our hands…
  • Hilary Duff is coming out with a new album on November 21st.  Her first single is called "Play with Fire" and has a techno dance vibe to it.
