Gossip Girl hunk Penn Badgley heard that the blogosphere is abuzz about 90210’s skinny starlets and how they are too thin for TV.

The 21-year-old actor told Popeater that he’s “never been proponent of the thin L.A. girls” and is glad that the females on his hit CW show “aren’t bone-thin.” (He’s currently romancing his on-and-off-screen girlfriend Blake Lively.)

Penn had some advice for the girls of 90210 (also a CW show): “I hope they eat a double cheeseburger or something.”

Sounds like there’s a feud brewing between the casts of 90210 and Gossip Girl!

Two of the stars of the new 90210 take the latest cover of Us Weekly.

The mag claims that two of the show’s lead actresses, Shenae Grimes (left) and Jessica Stroup (right), are too thin for TV. Shenae (est. 90 lbs) and Jessica (est. 100 lbs) have reportedly been ordered to gain weight and their costars are planning an intervention since some of them have “never seen them eat”.

Entertainment Weekly also poses a very, very similar question in one of their latest articles: “Are the skinny starlets of 90210 setting a bad example?”

One casting agent who works frequently with The CW reveals to the mag, “I know in discussions at ABC and CBS that ‘too skinny’ is no good. They talk about it as a minus point. But at The CW it’s a different story. They’re trying to pull in the Gossip Girl audience and that’s the image: hyper-skinny models.”

The CW’s 90210 became the highest-rated scripted debut in the network’s two-year history, reports THR. (Reviewers chimed in, saying it wasn’t a complete disaster.)

4.9 million viewers tuned into Tuesday’s two-hour premiere, garnering a 2.6 rating among adults 18-40. Smallville held the previous record in the adult demo with a 2.2 rating.

The network’s all-series premiere record is held by reality TV series competition America’s Next Top Model with a 2.6 rating.

The trade mag reports that if the CW’s overall performance does not improve, the network may be axed altogether.

The first reviews are in from last nigiht’s two-hour premiere of the much-buzzed-about 90210. Check it.

“We’re very racy, very provocative, and very modern,” says AnnaLynne. “But the emotions and the issues are very real,” adds Shenae. “Like, on most television shows, the girl gets an eating disorder, she cries, her mom solves it… all in one episode. It’s not like that in real life, and on our show, these characters have real layers that will all peel away very, very slowly.”

90210 premieres @ 8PM ET/PT on Tuesday, Sept. 2 on The CW.

When asked about her character (spoiled and attractive rich kid Naomi Clark) on the show, AnnaLynne said it’s basically the PG-version of Nip/Tuck’s Eden.

90210 is scheduled to premiere on September 2 on The CW.

90210 centers on a three-generation Beverly Hills family and will air this Fall. Original cast member Jennie Garth, 36, has signed on for a recurring role, reprising the part of Kelly Taylor. This time around, she will play a guidance counselor at her alma mater, West Beverly High.
