The 46-year-old actor recently shared that he felt a special kinship with the gangster he plays in the film.

“I related to John Dillinger like he was a relative,” Johnny said. “He reminded me of my stepdad and very much of my grandfather. He seemed to be one of those guys with absolutely no bull whatsoever, who lived at a time when a man was a man.”

Johnny Depp walks the red carpet for the European premiere of Public Enemies held at The Empire Leicester Square on Monday (June 29) in the West End of London.

The 46-year-old actor plays the charismatic bank robber John Dillinger, whose well executed robberies made him the top target of top FBI agent Melvin Purvis, played by Christian Bale.

Johnny Depp gets hugged by an overzealous fan outside the Ed Sullivan Theater prior to taping The Late Show With David Letterman in New York City on Thursday (June 25).

The 46-year-old actor left a $4,000 tip at Gibsons Bar and Steakhouse in Chicago following a screening of Public Enemies with his co-star, Marion Cotillard, NY Magazine reported.

Depp confirmed at the L.A. premiere of Public Enemies that he’ll star in an upcoming big screen version of the cult 1960’s show Dark Shadows, directed by Tim Burton.

Johnny Depp waves to the crowds at the 2009 Los Angeles Film Festival’s and Universal Pictures’ premiere of Public Enemies at the Mann Village Westwood Theatre on Tuesday (June 23) in Westwood, Los Angeles.

The 46-year-old actor recently revealed that he will be working on the fourth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean, and also an adaptation of the UK vampire TV series Dark Shadows. He also commented to MTV News that Tim Burton will be involved in directing that project.

Depp also mentioned that he will be in the upcoming film Rex Mundi and The Lone Ranger. Stills of Depp in character as the Mad Hatter in the upcoming Alice in Wonderland were released earlier this week.

Johnny Depp suits up in Ralph Lauren Purple Label and signs as many autographs as he can at the premiere of his new movie Public Enemies at the AMC Theater on Thursday (June 18) in Chicago, Ill.

At the premiere, the 45-year-old actor said of his character John Dillinger, “He was a deeply loyal guy, which I think is probably rare for someone in his line of work.” John Dillinger was a bank robber in the mid-western United States during the 1930s, who some considered to be a modern-day Robin Hood.

The film was shot on location in Chicago and Indiana. “I adore Chicago. I love it, I love it here,” Depp told CBS.

Johnny Depp gets soaked on the set of The Rum Diary in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Thursday (June 4).

The 45-year-old actor revealed in the July 2009 issue of Vanity Fair, that when he wants to relax, his family heads to Little Hall’s Bond Cay, his private, 45-acre island in the Bahamas.

“(The island) is my decompression,” Depp told Vanity Fair. “It’s my way of trying to return to normalcy … Escapism is survival to me…I don’t think I’d ever seen any place so pure and beautiful,” Depp said of the island as a whole. “You can feel your pulse rate drop about 20 beats. It’s instant freedom. And that rare beast — simplicity — can be had. And a little morsel of anonymity … Whenever I was getting frustrated about being ‘novelty boy’ and making movies, I told myself, ‘Calm down.’ I can come down here and disappear. I spent the Christmas season here with Vanessa and the kids. You can feed hot dogs to the nurse sharks in the Exumas — but it’s best to not swim when doing it.”

Johnny Depp flashes a smile for the cover of the July 2009 issue of Vanity Fair.

The 45-year-old actor’s interview covers a wide range of topics from Elizabeth Taylor (“She’s an astonishingly great broad,” he says) to the price of happiness, “Money doesn’t buy you happiness, but it buys you a big enough yacht to sail right up to it.”

Depp’s hobbies include reading, playing guitar, and painting. “What I love to do is paint people’s faces, y’know, their eyes,” he says. “Because you want to find that emotion, see what’s going on behind their eyes.”

The VF photo spread shows off Depp’s 45-acre private Bahamian island, Little Hall’s Pond Cay, which includes six different beaches.
