• Author Michael Crichton, best known for penning Jurassic Park and creating the TV hit ER, died of cancer Tuesday in Los Angeles. Crichton, 66, was diagnosed with lymphoma this spring.

British singing sensation Leona Lewis poses with an elephant stuffed animal in support of The Elephant Project, an organization to raise money and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association.

The organization was started by David Niederhoffer, now 18, after his grandfather passed away from Alzheimer’s disease. There is a phrase that says “elephants never forget,” and in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease, Niederhoffer is striving for those affected by the disease to “never forget.”

Here’s how it works: Well-known celebrities pose with an elephant beanie baby and sign a special Elephant Project card, which are then auctioned off to raise money to fight Alzheimer’s disease. Each auction package comes with an 8×10 picture of the celebrity and the elephant, a signed card from that celebrity, and an elephant beanie baby. Such celebrities as Zac Efron, Adam Sandler, Julie Andrews, and MANY more have participated in the project. James Marsden, Julianne Moore and Jennifer Garner are pictured below.

Currently, over $11,500 has been raised for Alzheimer’s care, research and support! The Summer 2008 round of Elephant Project auctions began yesterday with five to six auctions going live each day until Sunday, July 27th.

Gossip Girl actress Blake Lively keeps a low profile and underneath her hoodie as she reviews her script on the set of The Private Lives of Pippa Lee in Fairfield, Connecticut on Wednesday.

Redheaded beauty Julianne Moore was also seen on set, chatting with Blake.

Blake’s costar and real-life boyfriend Penn Badgley is featured at InStyle. He talks about what “gets him in the mood”, which includes slow, sultry music, sweat and chocolate-covered strawberries.

Blindness, stars Julianne Moore and will open this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Based on a novel by Nobel laureate Jose Saramago, it’s about a city where inhabitants inexplicably go blind, one by one.

Danny Glover, Gael Garcia Bernal and Alice Braga also star in the film and were also on hand at the photocall.

Check out the latest Disney Dream Portrait entitled “Where Another World is Just a Wish Away,” which shows actress Julianne Moore, portraying Ariel from The Little Mermaid,” surrounded by other mermen and mermaids including Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, 22 (foreground).

“I leapt at the chance,” Julianne, 47, said. “Ariel is my daughter’s favorite princess, so I was just really so excited to do it. All the images I’ve seen that Annie’s shot so far - Cinderella and Alice and the prince one - are absolutely exquisite. They are so beautiful and so kind of wonderfully emotional. So I was really thrilled to be asked to work with her and do this.”

“Yes, Julianne has a big mermaid tail; it’s interesting,” photographer Anne Leibovitz recalled from the shoot. “Michael, too. His movements were so graceful and beautiful you just felt like you were watching a real merman.”

Hell hath no fury…

Julianne Moore hosts the TSE Flagship Store opening on Tuesday in New York City and gives some choice words for New York Governor Eliot Spitzer according to People.

Julianne, 47, was once a supporter of the former attorney general and current (soon to be ex) Governor but has since turned her back since allegations of involvement in a prostitution ring arose on Monday.

Julianne fumed, “I’m really pissed. I honestly don’t care where or how people have sex, or with whom, but prostitution is illegal. For someone who’s got such a reputation for having a real attitude towards crime, you have to walk the walk. I’m sorry.”

Always the funny man, Stephen Colbert of Comedy Central’s Colbert Report chimed in, “I sat next to the guy three times and I didn’t pick up on any of this, and I usually have excellent whore-dar.”

Amidst public and political pressure, Gov. Spitzer resigned from office Wednesday morning. “To every New Yorker and to all those who believed in what I tried to stand for, I sincerely apologize,” he said. “There is much to be done, and I cannot allow for my private failings to disrupt the people’s work.”
