“An educational foundation is only part of the equation,” said Obama, who wants to expose more kids to the arts. “In order for creativity to flourish and imagination to take hold, we also need to expose our children to the arts from a very young age. We need to ensure that our children have both — knowledge and imagination. I know I want that for my girls. They deserve to have access to a good education and access to ideas and images that will spark their creativity.”

Later in the day, Michelle and President Barack Obama along with Commandant of the Marine Corps, General James Conway and his wife attended the Marine Corps Evening Parade at the Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C.

Michelle Obama shows off an elegant short haircut at an event celebrating the storytelling and history of country music in the East Room of the White House in Washington D.C., on Tuesday night (July 21).

The event was the second in a series of musical events at the White House, launched by the First Lady as a way to encourage arts and arts education.

President Barack Obama was there to lend his support. Artists that performed included Charley Pride, Brad Paisley, Alison Krauss and Union Station.

Michelle Obama, wearing a black and white shift dress, visits Russian orphan children at the St. Dmitry Primary School in Moscow, Russia on Tuesday (July 7).

The 45-year-old First Lady toured sites around the Russian capital as President Obama held a series of meetings on the final day of a Moscow summit.

Michelle also visited a nursing college attached to a Russian Orthodox cathedral. “The work you do is very important,” she said to the 22 nurses in attendance. “Thank you for your warm hearts.”

The next day, the Obama family flew into Italy for the G8 Summit where Michelle took her daughters, Sasha and Malia, to the Colosseum in Rome. 20+ pictures inside…

President Obama, 47, and Michelle, 45, were hosted by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and his wife Clio. The First Couple arrived in Italy after visiting Moscow.

The United States and Russia agreed to revive a joint commission that investigates the fate of prisoners of war and soldiers missing in action, the White House said.

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama attend the United We Serve volunteer event at the Fort McNair fitness center on Thursday (June 25) in Washington, D.C.

Michelle, 45, spoke at the event that loaded 15,000 backpacks with books, healthy snacks and toys for children of the men and women of the armed forces.

“Economic recovery is as much about what you’re doing in your communities as what we’re doing here in Washington - and it’s going to take all of us, working together,” the First Lady says in a video message on Serve.gov. “So, wherever your interests lie - whether it’s working with young people or caring for the sick and elderly in our hospitals, or helping to make the homes in your neighborhood more energy efficient - or any other issue, the most important thing is for you to get involved.”
