Rachel Weisz doesn’t dig the frozen faces of Hollywood, she tells the August 2009 issue of UK’s Harper’s Bazaar (via Fox News).
“It should be banned for actors, as steroids are for sportsmen,” the 39-year-old British actress says of Botox. “Acting is all about expression; why would you want to iron out a frown?”
As for fashion, Rachel says, “I love the way girls in London dress; it’s so different to the American ‘blow-dry and immaculate grooming’ thing.”
Rachel Weisz (in Valentino) is joined by producer Fernando Bovaira, director Alejandro Amenabar and costars Max Minghella and Oscar Isaac at the premiere of their new movie, Agora, at the Palais Des Festivals during the 2009 Cannes Film Festival on Sunday (May 17) in Cannes, France.
The 39-year-old British actress, who finished off her look with vintage Cartier earrings and bangles, says the story of her character Hypatia of Alexandria resonates today.
“Really, nothing has changed. I mean, we have huge technological advances and medical advances, but in terms of people killing each other in the name of God, fundamentalism still abounds,” Rachel says. “And in certain cultures, women are still second-class citizens, and they’re denied education.”

Agora is a historical drama set in Roman Egypt, concerning a slave (Max Minghella) who turns to the rising tide of Christianity in the hopes of pursuing freedom while also falling in love with his master, the famous female philosophy professor and atheist Hypatia of Alexandria (Weisz). The flick is set to open in December 2009.

Rachel Weisz attends the screening of her new movie, The Brothers Bloom, with costar Adrien Brody at NYC’s Tribeca Grand Screening Room on Thursday (May 7).
The 39-year-old British actress finished off her look with a Bottega Veneta clutch, Solange Azagury-Partridge jewels, and Jimmy Choo’s “Keenan” platform sandals.
“I don’t have too many hidden blessings in real life so I kind of have to fake them all on screen,” Rachel told FWD of her role in The Brothers Bloom. “I had to pretend to know how to play accordion, be a master in ping-pong and rap. Rapping was really hard though, because Adrien is a kid from Queens and I’m a girl from East London. So pretending to have rhythm in front of him was REALLY embarrassing and probably was one of the scariest moments in my life!”
One can only guess why Adrien has blue streaks in his hair!
The Brothers Bloom opens in limited release on Friday, May 15, and wide on May 29.

The stunning 39-year-old British actress has noticed that people are hungry to dig up the past, as if her parents’ failed marriage might somehow shed light on who she is now and the roles she chooses to inhabit.
“It’s very atavistic… is that the right word? That this happened or is like this because of that?” Weisz shares. “It’s such a hard thing to sum up. The best way to describe my parents and our family is… operatic. Everything played out in a very melodramatic way, as if we were the stars of a Tennessee Williams play, which is not actually that good for acting. It would be good for opera, but sadly, I can’t sing. If I had a million-dollar voice, I could nail opera, because I understand that emotional level of living. But with acting, you have to learn that it’s all about very quiet, internal moments. I think I was pretty crap at acting in the beginning because I was too operatic, and it’s taken me a while to learn how to tone that down.”
