Ali G/Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen is to play Sherlock Holmes while Will Ferrell has been cast as Watson, his crime-solving partner in a new untitled comedy.

“Just the idea of Sacha and Will as Sherlock Holmes and Watson makes us laugh,” Columbia co-prexy Matt Tolmach told Variety. “Sacha and Will are two of the funniest and most talented guys on the planet, and having them take on these two iconic characters is frankly hilarious.”

The actors previously starred together as rival racecar drivers in the 2006 comedy Talladega Nights: The Legend Of Ricky Bobby.

Baron Cohen, who most recently starred in Sweeney Todd, has been filming Bruno which is expected to be released in May 2009.

Bruno:The Movie has a tentative release date of October 2008. Sooooo exciting! This movie is going to be hilarious. If you haven’t seen Bruno in action yet, watch this clip!

Cohen, 36, is best known for his other personae, gangster wannabe Ali G and hapless Kazakhstani journalist Borat (both of which he had to retire because of their phenomenal success).

Last month, papa Sacha Baron Cohen, aka Kazakhstani TV reporter Borat, was spotted at Angelini Osteria eatery in L.A. hobbling into the trendy Italian eatery on crutches. Cohen, 36, has recently been filming a feature film about his spoof character Bruno, a gay television reporter from an Austrian television station.

Sacha Baron Cohen, aka Kazakh journalist Borat, is currently filming his latest movie, Bruno, a mockumentary about a gay Austrian TV presenter.

The crew had permission from the Witchita airport to film a scene on March 18 based on a “European man” visiting America. But security workers became alerted when they began dancing in tight short shorts, kissing and fighting in the lobby.

Some time after, Cohen’s film crew also reportedly stirred up chaos at a Kansas church by entering as an assumed European documentary crew but then attempted to become part of a parish play.

New actor parents Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher take a baby break for a movie date night out at the Arclight Theatre in Hollywood late Saturday night.

Their daughter, Olive, turned two months old earlier this month.

Actress Charlize Theron, 32, with partner Stuart Townsend also was at the Arclight, catching a showing of Sweeney Todd, the blood-gushing adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s 1979 hit (out in theaters now).
