Winona Ryder Covers BlackBook Magazine December 2009

Winona Ryder bites back on the December 2009 cover of BlackBook magazine. Here’s what the 38-year-old actress opened up about to BlackBook’s Nick Haramis:

On Matt Damon and Johnny Depp: “Matt couldn’t be a greater, nicer guy. I’m really lucky that I’m on good terms with him. With Johnny, it’s like we’re good, but we lead very different lives… ”

On her relationship with the press: “This weird thing happens when you’re written about in magazines, where you start to think, This is who I am. This is how I have to be. I felt restricted and pressured into being the way people perceived me. It was hard for me to find my footing. The Johnny thing made me really afraid of the press because, even though it was about him, I was beside him the entire time.”

On Angelina Jolie, who won the 1999 Academy Award for best supporting actress for Girl, Interrupted (Winona starred in and produced the film): “I never had any bad feelings about Angelina. And I was hurt that people thought that. Everyone assumed I was really jealous because I thought this would be my vehicle. We said from the very beginning that the actress who played Lisa would probably win an Oscar, because it was the big, great, showy part. But I always related to Susanna… I fought very hard for [Angleina] to have that part, and I never really felt like I got the chance to know her.”

On if Angelina ever personally thanked her for helping to jump-start her career: “I feel like it won’t read in print very nicely if I say that wasn’t really her style. But she seems to be a completely different person now.”

Winona Ryder: Heathers Sequel?

Winona Ryder leaves a pharmacy and then grabs a meal with a friend at E Baldi on Tuesday (July 7) in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The 37-year-old actress stirred up some buzz earlier in the year when she told Empire Magazine that a sequel to the 1988 cult film Heathers was in the works.

“Whatever you hear, there is a sequel in the works. I swear to God,” Winona told Empire. “But for some reason the writer Dan Waters and director Michael Lehmann don’t want to talk about it.”

However, Heathers director Michael Lehmann recently shared his thoughts on the matter.

Winona’s been talking about this for years — she brings it up every once in a while and Dan Waters and I will joke about it, but as far as I know there’s no script and no plans to do the sequel,” Michael said.

Winona Ryder is a Barney’s Babe

Winona Ryder goes on a shopping spree at Barney’s before hitting the Grove Shopping Center in West Hollywood on Thursday (April 16).

The 37-year-old actress will play Amanda Grayson, Spock’s human mother, in the much anticipated Star Trek movie coming out May 8th.

Lately, Winona has been the center of a lot of speculation whether or not she is the “frenemy” mentioned in Gwyneth Paltrow’s latest newsletter.

The two actresses were former best friends in the late 90s.

Gwyneth Paltrow: Winona Ryder’s Frenemy?

In her latest GOOP newsletter, Gwyneth Paltrow talks about why the media spins stories negatively and mentions a “frenemy,” most likely referring to her former best friend, actress Winona Ryder. (Their friendship reportedly ended when Gwyn reportedly stole the part of Shakespeare in Love from Winona but Winona was never considered for the role.)

Gwyn writes, “Back in the day, I had a ‘frenemy’ who, as it turned out, was pretty hell-bent on taking me down. This person really did what they could to hurt me. I was deeply upset, I was angry, I was all of those things you feel when you find out that someone you thought you liked was venomous and dangerous. I restrained myself from fighting back. I tried to take the high road. But one day I heard that something unfortunate and humiliating had happened to this person. And my reaction was deep relief and…happiness. There went the high road. So, why does it feel so good to hear something bad about someone you don’t like? Or someone you DO like? Or someone you don’t KNOW? I once asked the editor of a tabloid newspaper why all of the stories about a famous British couple had a negative bent. He said that when the headline was positive, the paper didn’t sell. Why is that? What’s wrong with us? I asked the sages to shed a little light. Here’s to washing our mouths out with soap… Love, Gwyneth.” Check out the rest of the Q&A at GOOP.com.

The “unfortunate and humiliating” incident Gwyn mentioned is likely referring to Winona’s 2001 shoplifting incident, where she stole $5K worth of designer clothes and accessories at a Saks Fifth Avenue department store.

Kate & Winona Love Their Marc Jacobs

  • While Kate Hudson hangs out with Owen Wilson in Maui, estranged husband Chris Robinson has been spotted solo in Manhattan.
  • Alanis Morissette will appear on FX drama Nip/Tuck this season. Alanis will play the love interest for Roma Maffia’s character, Dr. Liz Cruz, in three episodes, beginning Oct. 31.
  • Former New Jersey Gov. James E. McGreevey, who has remained publicly silent since resigning from office two years ago after announcing he was gay, is set to tell his story on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” Oprah landed the exclusive interview with 49-year-old McGreevey because of her sense of faith and spirituality, according to friends of the former governor. About a dozen friends accompanied McGreevey and his partner, Australian financial adviser Mark O’Donnell, 42, to Chicago for the taping scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. The interview will air Sept. 19, the same day McGreevey’s political memoir, “The Confession,” goes on sale.
  • Anna Nicole Smith was so distraught after son Daniel Smith was pronounced dead that she had to be sedated, her attorney Michael Scott said Wednesday. “The devastation and grief over Daniel’s sudden death coupled with the sedation has been so extreme that Anna Nicole experienced memory loss and that it was necessary for [attorney Howard K Stern] to tell Anna again that Daniel had passed away,” he added. Yesterday it was revealed that Stern was also in the room when the 20-year-old passed out. Meanwhile, the chief inspector of the Bahamas coroner’s office on Wednesday called Smith’s death “suspicious” and authorities say Anna Nicole will be subpoenaed to testify at the coroner’s inquest next month.
